Oh boy, new WSTR album! I have been looking forward to this one for a while now. I’m also very excited they are touring with Neck Deep in the U.S. this fall because I can imagine their live show being pretty great.
Overall I’m a fan of this album! I’ve been trying to think of a word or phrase to describe how it’s a little different than Red, Green or Inbetween, and I think I’m settling on: It’s got more spunk/bounce to it.
Interpret that how you will, but I chose those words because for me the album is a mix of their previous album with the attitude of a mid 2000’s pop-punk album – The Geeks Get The Girls by American Hi-Fi and multiple Bowling For Soup songs come to mind (maybe “mid 2000’s pop-punk album” is too large of a generalization).
That being said I still think it sounds like a WSTR album, just with a twist around the edges. A good example of this is in Bad To The Bone (the music video is up above) or Crisis. To me, I notice the “twist” in the verses and then when the chorus hits I get thrown back a bit to the sound I loved from Red, Green or Inbetween.
My top three (in no particular order) after listening through the album three times:
- Riddle Me This
- Bad To The Bone
- Hide Everything Sharp
Regardless of what I think, check it out (here)! Catch them on tour as well, because it’s going to be fun!
